“He was standing by the lake watching the fishermen… “ (Luke,5)

He heard afar
the muffled voices
as they threw the grey net
against the sky
and halted

when it rested
on the water
and duly disappeared.
They stood motionless

in the morning mist
waiting to feel the strain

of that saving weight
and they sprung up
to pull the ropes.

He saw cuts
on their arms, some still
bleeding as they dragged

the boat to the shore.
They called out to each other
as they cleaned the nets

and He inhaled the sweat
of concentration
on burnt foreheads

and of rushed movements
in the breeze
among the muddy
scent of fish.

And He saw clearly
and came closer

and He stepped
into their boat.
